Second-longest snow drought on record continues for the Triad

With no snow on the horizon, the Triad snow drought just keeps getting longer

It's been over two years since we had any snow to enjoy.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — You don't need us to tell you. It's been a very long time since it has snowed in our Triad area. In fact, our WFMY News 2 Weather team has been counting the days and crunching the numbers. This snow-free streak is reaching near-record levels for our area. Will it end anytime soon?

Over 2 Years Without Snow

The last time it snowed in Greensboro was on January 30th of 2022. This capped off a month that saw 4 different snow events, adding up to over 8 inches.

Since then, we haven't been able to get any snow to stick in our area. The running clock has reached 752 days as of Tuesday, February 2024.

How does that stack up with history? Well, it's very high on the list.

Almost every winter in Triad history has had at least some measurable snowfall. Last winter, we only saw a trace. This winter, again only just a trace so far.

Looking back at records that start in 1903 this is the second longest snow-free streak in Triad history.

The only time we waited longer for snow was in the early 90s. That streak began on December 14th, 1989 and didn't end until February 24th, 1993.

We're still 417 days away from breaking that record. That means we won't pass it unless we finish this winter with no snow, and also see no snow *next* winter.

Can it Still Snow This Year?

Of course, the Triad area has seen snow in March many times before. We average about 1.6 inches of snow in the month of March. However, we haven't seen any measurable snow in March since 2018 when we had 5 inches.

Over the course of history, there have been many significant snow events in March.

In 1927, Greensboro saw a 20 inch snow storm which tops the list of records for our area.

In 1960, many remember when it snowed every Wednesday totally 21.3 inches.

History tells us there is still some hope for this year. However, the long range outlook doesn't look promising.

Above-average temperatures are likely to finish the month of February and cold air looks limited in March as well.

We will continue to watch the trends and see what happens!
