Several schools closed Monday in wake of Helene

Many areas are still without power or internet.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — The following school systems will be closed Monday, September 30:

Wilkes County Schools

Surry County Schools

Mount Airy City Schools

Alleghany County Schools (also closed Tuesday, October 1)

County officials are still assessing conditions at schools in the wake of Helene, which ripped through much of western North Carolina on Thursday and Friday.

Many areas of Wilkes County were flooded as a result of the storm, including this area on Wilkesboro Ave. that a WFMY News 2 reporter captured Friday.

Monday will be an optional teacher work day. According to the county, employees who do not feel comfortable traveling should not do so.
