ASHEVILLE, N.C. — As part of the ongoing recovery efforts in western North Carolina after Helene devastated much of the area, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced it is providing 40 Starlink satellite systems to the area to help with responder communications.
FEMA said additional satellites are also being shipped to "assist with communication infrastucture restoration."
One Starlink will be deployed per county Emergency Operations Center, according to FEMA.
Many areas of western North Carolina, even major cities like Asheville, are still without power or cellular service several days after Helene swept across the area.
The latest updates have Helene responsible for 107 deaths across six states, including 46 in North Carolina.
