BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University is operating in emergency mode in the aftermath of Helene.
All classes are cancelled on its Boone and Hickory campuses.
Students on campus also have to abide by a set of rules to preserve resources -- like reducing water usage and commutes.
The university is warning non-mandatory employees to stay away from campus.
WFMY News 2 crews were at the university and saw that parts of the campus were blocked off with tape.
Safety is a priority as App State University officials are maneuvering in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
Classes are cancelled until the end of this week.
Currently, the university is operating in a condition 3 closure. meaning only essential resources are available to students.
On Boone's campus, dorms, the main cafeteria, campus clinic, and gym remain open to students.
The university said no dorms are structurally compromised.
Some parts of App State are unrecognizable. In certain parts of campus, crews are blocking areas that are considered unsafe. Roads and sidewalks are washed out, and debris can be seen all over.
Currently, the university has working water. App State is asking people to try and conserve the water as best as they can by limiting the length of showers and only using the dishwater when its full.
As of Monday, the boil water advisory was lifted in Boone. Many shelters are available in the area.
