Man dies after tree falls on car in Yadkin Co., NC Highway patrol confirms

YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has confirmed that one person died in Yadkin County on Friday as a result of Hurricane Helene.

Around 8:15 a.m., the State Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle collision that happened on Old US 421 in Yadkin Count Friday. The collision happened when a 2006 Nissan was going east on Old US 421 and a large oak tree fell from the westbound shoulder across the road, landing on top of the Nissan going east. 

The driver was identified as 57-year-old Todd Joseph Proffitt from Hamptonville. He died as a direct result of injuries sustained in the collision. 

In a Facebook post, the West Yadkin Fire Department showed the scene on Old 421 near Andrew Road, where a large tree had fallen across the roadway. 

According to the fire department, the Yadkin County Rescue Squad, the Buck Shoals Volunteer Fire Department, Yadkin County Emergency Services, the Yadkin County Division of the Department of Transportation, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol all responded to the scene.

This is the third confirmed death caused by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, according to officials. Two other people have died in Charlotte.
