GREENSBORO, N.C. —
First Snowflakes of 2024?
Our first chance of snowflakes for the year results in a cold front moving through the southeast across the Carolinas and stalling throughout the day on Monday, bringing chilly dry air to the area. If moisture to our west is able to survive the trip over the mountains, there's a small chance of seeing measurable snow, particularly in northwestern counties.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: The last time we had measurable snowfall in Greensboro was January 29th, 2022, just short of two years ago. We recorded 1.8" of snow.
Snow: What to expect
Depending on moisture, temperatures and the atmospheric profile -- slushy snow showers may be on and off through the day on Monday. Highs will be seasonably cold behind the front, nearing around 40 degrees at best. Rain may mix in with snow particularly in the early afternoon on Monday. It's worth noting that accumulation is possible (especially for northwesternmost counties) but by no means a guarantee.
The general consensus is that you'll have better luck of snowflakes accumulating in most northwestern counties of the Triad including Wilkes, Alleghany, Surry, Yadkin especially for Monday morning with temperatures still likely in the deep 20s.
As the coldest air of the season arrives in the new week, please be mindful of the 4 P's including pets, people, pipes, and plants! Temperatures highs next week will barely make it into the 40s with overnight temps in the teens some nights. Brr!!
