GREENSBORO, N.C. — Snow was in the mix weekend after weekend across Central Piedmont. Waves of cold fronts and low-pressure systems worked their magic to make it a Winterfest nearly every weekend of the month. We reached 100% of our winter snow average in the first month of the season! We kicked off the month with temperatures in the 70s. On Jan. 1, a high of 77 was recorded at PTI. Two days later, we were prepping for snow. On January 3rd, two inches of snow were reported in Greensboro. By Jan. 16, we were doing the same thing again. Roughly 3 inches of snow was reported in Greensboro. A trace was recorded a day after. Four days later, on Jan. 21, we snow again! This go-around we had 1" so it was more of a hassle than a fun play. The day before and day after this system we were teased by traces of snow. The last batch of the bunch came just a couple of days ago before the end of the month on January 29th. Greensboro had about 2" of snow which brought us to a grand total of 8.2" of snow for the month. We are certainly ahead of last year's track with only 2" of snow reported in the whole year! We haven't seen snow totals like this since 2018. By January 31, 2018, we had reached 7.5" of snow in Greensboro. The most recent big snow day was on December 9, 2018, when a whopping 12" was reported at PTI!

It was also just a very cold January. Temperatures on average throughout the month of January are generally between 30° and 50°, but this month our temperatures were below that normal range. We had 19 days below average. With the monthly average temperature for January 2022 at 47.1° ! We had 8 days with highs in the 30s. January 16th and 21st were the coldest days with high temperatures both days at 31°. But, the real frigid temperatures were felt at night. Five days in January had nights in the teens. January 22 was the coldest night of the month at 15°. The last time we were this cold was nearly a year ago in January 2021, when the average temperature was 48.1°, which is still not quite as cold as what we felt for the last 31 days.
