Rain, gusty winds, and a low tornado threat Friday evening

Widespread rain returns Friday evening.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Get ready for another wet and windy system to roll into the Piedmont. It's coming for us Friday evening. The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is tracking some rain, gusty winds, and a threat of a few severe thunderstorms and even a tornado.

Another Storm on the Way

Like earlier in the week, strong low pressure is moving our way from the middle of the country. Early on Friday will still be quiet for us, but clouds will increase by lunchtime, rain will move in during the afternoon, winds will pick up by evening, and thunderstorms will be possible for the evening hours.

There will be many differences between Friday's storm system and Tuesday's storm system.

  • It won't be as wet: Rain totals will be in the 1/2 to 1" range. This could cause problems given our wet ground, but this is much less water than the other day.
  • It won't be as windy: Gusty winds of 35 to 45 mph are still likely for Friday evening. This is similar to Tuesday but a little less and not quite as long. Higher gusts are possible in some thunderstorms.
  • Storms won't be as widespread: Severe thunderstorms are indeed possible on Friday mainly between 6pm and 12am. They won't be as numerous as Tuesday, meaning not everybody will see a bad storm. There is still a low tornado threat though.

Gusty Winds Return

Gusty winds will return on Friday, but not all day. We're expecting the morning to be calm. Winds will slowly increase by the afternoon with gusts of 20 to 30 mph or so for the early afternoon hours. By evening, that's when winds will pick up in more earnest.

Simlar to the last event, some widespread wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph will be likely for the evening hours. These could extend into the overnight even after the rain ends. Plan on windy weather to continue on Saturday with gusts of 25 to 35 mph.

Gusty winds will be most likely after 6pm Friday extending through the evening.

Rain Amounts

Flooding was the biggest problem with our Tuesday storm. That means our ground has only had 2 days to recover and is likely still very soggy. For this storm, we don't expect quite as much rain but it will still be wet. Rain totals should range from half inch to one inch for the afternoon and evening hours on Friday. Rain will start between 2 and 4pm and end between 10pm and 12am.

More rain is coming our way for Friday, but there will be less of it than the other day.

Tornado Risk

There is a risk for tornadoes across the Carolinas on Friday. Similar to Tuesday, it is low for our area. The areas that have the biggest risk for a short-lived tornado would be in the southeastern part of the Piedmont. Keep an eye out for any possible warnings between 6pm and 12am.
