2 Mental Health Patients Drown After Horry Co. Sheriff’s Van Swept Away By Flood Waters

One patient was from Waccamaw Mental Health and the other was from Loris Hospital.

NICHOLS, SC – Two people have drowned after a Horry County Sheriff’s Office van was swept away by flood waters.

It happened on Highway 76 south of Nichols in Marion County.

According to WBTW, two Horry County Sheriff's deputies were transporting two mental health patients to McLeod Behavioral Health in Darlington. One patient was from Waccamaw Mental Health and the other was from Loris Hospital.

Chief Deputy Tom Fox said the van was overtaken by water about ½ mile from the Little Pee Dee River.

The two deputies were rescued by high water rescue teams. The inmates have not been recovered.

They had to suspend recovery efforts due to rising water.
