Winston-Salem, Greensboro apartments evacuated as flood waters creep in

Apartments in Winston-Salem and Greensboro had to be evacuated early Monday morning because of Florence flooding.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Winston-Salem fire officials say a total of 28 people have been evacuated after flood waters began to creep into their apartments late Sunday night into Monday morning.

The Winston-Salem fire department tweeted a photo of the apartments located in the 3800 block of Bethania Station Road. It shows flood waters at high levels in the back of the apartments.

Fire officials say the people who live there have been taken to a local emergency shelter and other locations.

In Greensboro, police began helping evacuate people at the Maplewood Apartments in the 1600 block of Maplewood Avenue around 2 a.m. Monday. Police say the apartment complex has a history of flooding because it's in a low lying area. Police also evacuated folks at Pinecroft Place Apartments in Greensboro as the lower parking lot turned into a lake. Greensboro Fire Department's Swift Water Rescue team evacuated 70 people from 14 buildings at the complex.

Heavy rains from Florence have made several roads in the Triad impassible.

The rain is expected to die down sometime Monday night.
