Western NC Helene victims receive support from unlikely source — Taiwan

The island nation is used to dealing with the effects of natural disasters.

RALEIGH, N.C. — On Monday, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced Monday that the government of Taiwan has donated $300,000 to help residents of western North Carolina recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Taiwanese officials were in North Carolina on Monday to present their donation, which came from the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Atlanta. The donation will go into the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, according to the governor's office.

“North Carolinians are determined to recover and rebuild from this horrific storm and we’re grateful for the help pouring in from across the country and around the world,” Cooper said in a statement. “It’s heartwarming to receive this donation from Taiwan and the support of its people for ours.”

According to officials, North Carolina has the second-largest Taiwanese community in the southeastern United States. Taiwan is also used to experiencing similar tragedies, understanding the profound sense of loss that comes after a natural disaster like a typhoon or earthquake.

"It is this shared experience that motivates us to stand in solidarity with the people of North Carolina during this difficult time,” said Director General Yi-Lung Wang of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Atlanta.

Taiwan is an island nation in East Asia, about 140 miles southeast of mainland China.
