LAKE LURE, N.C. — A beloved bridge is temporarily back in Lake Lure.
On Thursday, Oct. 17, a man who goes by Papa Scrap and his wife dropped off a new Rainbow Bridge in Lake Lure after the original was washed away by Helene.
While this bridge is a temporary addition, it allows those grieving their pets a place to honor them immediately.
The original Rainbow Bridge was a place for animal lovers to mourn their lost pets. Hundreds of pet collars used to hang from the bridge's rails as signs of remembrance and honor.
If you want to honor your pet by placing their collars on the temporary bridge, it will be located at Parks, Recreation, and Lake Department at 658 Memorial Highway, Lake Lure, NC 28746.
"You may place your pet collars here in their memory anytime," wrote the Town of Lake Lure on Facebook.
The Rainbow Bridge borrowed its name from a poem of the same name that is normally given to pet owners when they have to make the decision to put their beloved companion down.
The original bridge was created in 2022 by artist Amy Wald and was located at the entrance to the River's Edge Dog Garden near the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge.
At this time, it's unclear when the Rainbow Bridge will be rebuilt on the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge gardens. Representative Becky Melton said, "It is still too soon to know what the future will be for the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. Construction crews are still in the process of clearing the debris from the bridge and the river."
