NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Duke Energy provided an update on Thursday, Oct. 3 about its efforts to restore power in North and South Carolina after the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene.

The energy company said 90% of customers in North and South Carolina will have power restored by Friday, Oct. 4.

In South Carolina, Duke Energy said 134,000 customers will get power by Friday evening and 85,000 more in the hardest-hit areas by Sunday, Oct. 6.

In North Carolina, 27,000 customers will get power on Friday evening and 69,000 more in the hardest-hit areas by Sunday.

However, there is still much more work to be done.

In areas of North Carolina with catastrophic damage, many homes can't receive power. Helene caused total grid infrastructure damage that is hard to access, according to Duke Energy.

This leaves 105,000 more customers without power. Duke Energy said they are "working closely with the state on plans to address these as quickly as possible."

Crews have been repairing and rebuilding the electric system in Western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina. Overall, Duke Energy reported that 2 million outages have been restored across the Carolinas.
