LAKE LURE, N.C. — “Look what showed up at my house!”
That was the subject line of an email sent by Garden Chair Kathy Tanner to volunteers after one neighbor found the guest book from the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge inside a mailbox in their yard. The guest book was waterlogged but still legible.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge long stood as a place for visitors to take in the sights of Chimney Rock and enjoy the gardens, which were home to more than 2,000 species of plants. Visitors would often sign the guest book whenever they visited the bridge.
After Helene came through western North Carolina in September, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge sustained heavy structural damage and the west end gardens were washed away by the storm.
The Rainbow Bridge, which was a colorful bridge dedicated to remembering and mourning lost pets, was destroyed by Helene’s floodwaters. Despite online claims, the Rainbow Bridge has not been rebuilt.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge said they remain focused on making sure their community and citizens are safe, according to a statement on their website.
