GREENSBORO, N.C. — FEMA has taken control of the Greensboro Migrant Facility, formerly the Hebrew Academy, to aid in relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
Here's the full statement from a FEMA spokesperson:
“FEMA continues to lead a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach to assist communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. As part of our effort to ensure that every available resource is mobilized, FEMA will soon sign an agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services to transfer the Greensboro Facility in North Carolina, previously operated by HHS, to FEMA. The Greensboro facility will be another resource to ensure that FEMA has access to a wide array of assets and resources should they be needed for the recovery.”
At the time of reporting, it is unclear what the facility will be used for.
Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said on Oct. 4 that the facility could be used to provide shelter to Hurricane Helene victims. However, this has not been confirmed by FEMA yet.
Back in March, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services operationalized the site, saying it was ready to take in migrant children. However, in July, the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) said it would be scaling back to only facility upkeep.
