Greensboro crews help cleanup efforts in Buncombe Co. following Helene's impact

From city crews to the chefs, it's all about coming together to restore a community.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — Some of the worst damage from the storm is in Asheville, where historic flooding has swept away buildings and homes.

WFMY News 2's Tanya Rivera visited the city Monday night, witnessing the devastation firsthand and meeting a group from Greensboro who had come to assist with recovery efforts.

The Greensboro crews she talked to were camping at the Asheville Civic Center, one of the few places with power for them to stay.

The heavy rains from Hurricane Helene triggered landslides and exposed underground pipes, which the Greensboro team was working to repair. The city's Water Resources Operations Manager acknowledged that the job is messy and complicated, but their priority is restoring water services to Asheville and Black Mountain.

There are so many different crews from so many other places due to the catastrophic flooding that happened last week leaving the county with no power and no water.

Fortunately for all the crews there working, Dane Cruz and his volunteers are cooking up 1,000 meals a day for first responders and crews. They're serving meals from 4:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

"This is my community," Cruz said. "I need this place to continue being Asheville and continue to keep people coming in here and enjoying the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains."

People who would have never met, now share a bond served up by a big disaster first and now by determination. Everyone is serving alongside one another to help one another.
