NORTH CAROLINA, USA — For some people in Western North Carolina, it is still unclear where their next meal is coming from.
WFMY News 2 spoke to two chefs who are stepping in to make sure people have a hot meal as they are working to recover from the devastation.
For the past week, Mercy Chefs gave out 13,000 meals a day and counting in WNC. Co-founder Anne LeBlanc said her organization is serving lunch and dinner all over the area including: Hendersonville and Bat Cave. She explains the meals give people a sense of normalcy.
"One of the residents opened the box and just couldn't believe what a beautiful meal and started to cry," LeBlanc explained, "Everyone in this region is impacted whether it's no water or no power. The community buildings are gone and peoples lives have been lost and it's really heartbreaking."
Here in the Triad, Southern Roots in Jamestown sent a caravan of volunteers to Boone and the surrounding area on Monday.
Owner Lisa Howley said the plan is to start serving people today and throughout the week. She is partnering up with churches and local chefs to give out thousands of meals.
"The churches around the area are wanting to know if we can bring 200 - 300 lunches a day. We've got one church that has asked for 800 to 1000 a day," Howley shared.
Both chefs said they felt a calling to help our neighbors in Western North Carolina.
