HIGH POINT, N.C. — This morning we are hearing from a pilot who saw the aftermath of Hurricane Helene destruction from a unique point of view.
Captain Michael Biesecker recently returned to the Triad.
He flew to Western North Carolina three times in just 14 days.
He is a part of the Kiwanis Club of High Point. The organization is hosting a blanket drive at The Arc of High Point this morning.
Biesecker flew his personal four seater airplane full of hurricane relief supplies to WNC. The effort was made possible by the community coming together through generous donations.
Biesecker said he flew to several parts of the mountain area including Lake Lure and Chimney Rock.
Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. He said a nearly two hour flight could of been an eight hour drive to get into hard to reach places on the mountains.
"It's sort of a contrast because you have the foliage changing. But then you go over a river and see where the devastation wiped out communities, homes, and farms," Biesecker shared, "It was a hard feeling because you admire the beauty of the trees changing. We were flying right over the mountains and the national forest. But then you come across a valley and you could just see where everything was completely wiped out."
He thanks air traffic control for making the process seamless.
The blanket drive starts at 8:30am this morning and goes until 4:30pm at The Arc of High Point.
