Will the NASCAR All-Star Race be a washout? A look at the forecast

See when rain or storms could interrupt the NASCAR All-Star Race weekend events at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — It's the biggest week of the year for Piedmont NASCAR fans -- All-Star Race weekend festivities are happening in North Wilkesboro for the second year in a row. The big question: will the weather cooperate for race weekend? Rain may be a problem that will need to be dodged at times as the drivers get ready to race for various events. The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is tracking it.

The forecast

We're stuck in a weather pattern right now that continues to send a lot of rain our way into North Carolina. The reason for this is a big dip in the jet stream, keeping our area unsettled with clouds and showers.

It won't rain all the time into the weekend. However, there will continue to be a few disturbances that bring rain - starting Friday night through midday Sunday.

If you have plans to attend the NASCAR events, make sure you're using the WFMY News 2 app to track the interactive radar and stay ahead of any rain or lightning.

When will it rain?

Rain will start to return with scattered evening showers for Friday afternoon and evening.

The wettest day will be Saturday. That's when a new low-pressure system will roll into the Carolinas bringing a few rounds of rain. Rain may be heavy at times on Saturday, with lightning a concern too. Isolated storms could be strong and pose a threat of hail and damaging winds. Our southernmost counties are under a "Marginal Risk," meaning isolated severe storms are possible.

For Sunday, rain will linger into the morning and midday. We're hopeful that rain will taper off into the evening in time for the All-Star Race set for 8 p.m. Sunday. We'll be keeping eyes on the radar.

WFMY News 2 will keep you posted on any racing schedule changes or adjustments.
