When will it rain this weekend?

Flooding may be possible across NC early Saturday, be ready

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The weekend is almost here, and so are some weather changes for our area. The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is tracking a system that will be bringing more rain, especially for Saturday. Here's what you need to know.

When will it rain?

Showers will likely be heavy at times beginning late Friday night into early Saturday morning. The majority of the moisture will cross the Piedmont early on in the morning. By the early afternoon, shower chances will begin to trickle off becoming more isolated. Still, it's a good idea to keep your rain gear close by just in case.

Clouds will begin to clear late Saturday night into Sunday with sunshine and dry conditions back in the forecast. Sunday's high will be cooler behind the front in the middle 50s despite kicking off the day in the 40s. Winds will also be gusty in the afternoon between 30-35 mph.

How much will it rain?

A soaking rain is likely for Saturday morning as low pressure pushes across the Carolinas. In fact, we're under a "marginal risk" of flash flooding on Saturday.

The higher threat stands to our south and west, where locally heavier storms could pose a higher threat to flash flooding. Going to be traveling? Be careful!

Though the majority of the rain will conclude by Saturday afternoon, rain tallies still could fall between half an inch to an inch total from this system. Here's a couple tallies of what models are projecting across our area:

Any thunderstorm concerns?

Only a few of our southern counties are under a Level 1 risk of storms from Saturday morning through evening and a Level 2 risk of storms for southeastern North Carolina and all of South Carolina.

NOTE: the main threat of severe weather will likely stay to our south due to our area being on the cooler side of this system. Areas to our south and east that will be warmer have a higher risk of developing convective strong-to-severe storms. In any case, make sure you have a way to receive severe weather alerts. Prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall at times through Saturday morning with cooler air this weekend.
