GREENSBORO, NC -- We've been dealing with snow all week, now it's time to deal with rain. A big amount is on the way, and with rapidly melting snow that means flooding is likely on Friday and Saturday here in the Triad. The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is on top of it.
"We have just as much moisture on the way now as we did with the snowstorm," according to WFMY Chief Meteorologist Tim Buckley. "Of course this time, it will be warm enough for it to fall as all rain."
That rain will start to arrive after daybreak on Friday. A mainly steady, sometimes heavy rain will continue through much of the day, adding up to 1 to 2 inches across the Piedmont. Keep in mind, rain is very good at melting snow. When you factor in all the melting snow, the rain impact will be more like 2 to 3 inches, which typically brings us some flooding issues. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Friday and Saturday.
FRIDAY FLOODING --- Hey all, please spread the word here. Lots of rain on the way for Friday, and into early Saturday....
"We're likely to have a lot of standing water on roads Friday," said Buckley. "That threat continues into much of Saturday as well."
At least some scattered heavy showers will be possible on Saturday to begin the weekend. Things will begin to dry out a bit by Saturday evening, with mainly dry weather expected on Sunday.
Greensboro is only 2.6" shy of its wettest year on record. It's likely we'll be very close to that record after this weekend, with still two weeks left in 2018.
