Broken Record: More Downpours This Week

Look for Downpours and Possible Flooding

GREENSBORO, NC --- You may be tired of heavy rain, but there's more on the way. Our weather pattern is stuck, with tropical moisture moving in day-by-day. This looks to last through and beyond Memorial Day weekend.

The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is tracking tropical moisture moving in from the Caribbean into the Southeast Radar. This is moving along southerly winds generated by a low-pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico that just won't budge. It's been that way for more than a week, and looks to stay that way for another week.

Like the last few days, it won't rain all the time. Each afternoon, we'll need to watch the radar as a few storms pop up. With this much humidity and moisture in the area, each storm that forms will be able to produce very heavy rain. With a saturated ground, it doesn't take much for some flash flooding to occur. Be vigilant in any storms that form, because water could rise quickly.

Remember these flash flood safety tips:

  • If a flash flood warning is issued for your area, or if there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall.
  • Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground, when water is not moving or not more than a few inches deep. You and the vehicle can be swept away quickly. If your vehicle is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay in the vehicle. If the water is rising inside the vehicle, seek refuge on the roof.
  • Do not disregard or drive around traffic barricades that close off flooded roadways.
  • Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams, rivers or creeks, particularly during threatening conditions.
