GREENSBORO, N.C. — Fall is in full swing and it's really feeling like it now with chilly mornings and cooler afternoons becoming more of a regular thing. With the chilly air comes the time to think about frost.
It's time to keep our plants and our furry friends in mind too. You'll have to start bringing them inside in the evening, especially the next couple nights.
It may seem like we're getting cold really early but by this point in the year this is very common. The average first freeze (32° or below) for the Triad, according to the record books at PTI is October 28th.
Not too far away from the Triad, our friends to our North and West usually see their first freeze a little earlier than we do, on average. Places like Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Avery County see their first freeze usually between October 15-21st, about 1-2 weeks before the Triad.
Fall weather arrived pretty much on time in the Triad, which is about the only thing playing by the rules in 2020, and our first freeze, likely tonight, will be right on time, too.
It doesn't always happen when it's "supposed" to though. Our first freeze has been a few weeks early before, with Oct 2nd being the earliest on record (1947) or it has come as late as Dec 1st (2009).
The next couple nights will feature some winter chill in the air but gradually warming up a tad by the end of the week.
