Triad business helps out with hurricane relief efforts

Crav'n Caribbean in Greensboro says it will take a portion of profits from this week's sales to give back to its home country.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — As Hurricane Beryl churns through the Caribbean, Jamaica’s Prime Minister activated its State of Disaster Wednesday.

A small business in Greensboro said it wants to give back to Jamaica, its home country.

"Some of our profits from this week's sales, we will be sending some stuff back to Jamaica," owner of Crav'n Caribbean Carlos Abrahams shared, "I have family that have been through other storms just as bad."

The restaurant has two locations in Greensboro and Charlotte.

Abrahams said he wants to use the profits to purchase supplies for those in need. Jamaica is just one of many islands in the West Indies facing the storm.

"When you have hurricanes going to islands, it's a little different then when you have severe weather in the states," he said, "You can kind of flee to another state. In Jamaica, you have no where else to go."

Chef Dante Robinson moved to Greensboro from Jamaica. He spoke to his family this morning and is hoping for the best.

"I'm kind of worried for them because I know it's a really strong hurricane. At the same time, I think they're going to be fine."

A spokesperson for Samaritan's Purse said it recently sent aid to Grenada to help thousands of households.

"The cargo included 600 rolls of emergency shelter tarp. The number one need that we’ve heard is that roofs just flew off homes. We also sent 3,000 solar lights and 3,000 collapsible cans where people can store clean water in." Samaritan's Purse Deputy Director of International Projects Aaron Ashoff said.

The non-profit organization said it has already started the process of setting up similar aid for Jamaica and nearby islands.
