GREENSBORO, N.C. —

2023 Annual Solar Eclipse

On Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, an annual solar eclipse will cross North America. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun when it is at or near its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther from Earth and appears smaller than the sun, it does not completely cover the Sun. This results in what appears to be a ring around the Moon, often referred to as the "ring of fire."

The Path of Annularity

To witness the full "ring of fire," you'll need to be in the path of annularity that approximates 125 miles. The start of the path is over the Pacific and makes landfall in Oregon. It curves to Texas and then continues southward through Central America. Outside of this path, you'll only see a partial eclipse. While the whole event lasts a few hours, annularity only lasts around five minutes.

What to expect in the Triad

We will experience a 39% partial eclipse in the Triad beginning at 11:52 a.m. The maximum will be around 1:17 p.m. and the partial eclipse will conclude at 2:44 p.m. The full duration of the event is around 2 hours and 51 minutes.

Viewing the Partial Eclipse

The sun is never fully blocked by the Moon during this event. IMPORTANT: it is not safe to look directly into the Sun during an annual eclipse (or partial) without wearing an eclipse or solar viewing glasses. Do not look at the Sun through binoculars, a camera lens, etc while wearing. Eclipse glasses are unlike regular sunglasses and should be inspected before use.

Sat, Oct. 14th's Forecast

As the forecast stands, expect mostly cloudy conditions with showers likely on & off through the afternoon with temperatures in the upper 60s. At this point, likely, this will likely completely obstruct the view of the partial solar eclipse in most counties, but a few breaks in the clouds are possible especially in western counties.
