2 Small Earthquakes in Surry County Friday evening
The first was a 2.3 magnitude earthquake that hit about 20 miles west of Mount Airy. According to USGS, residents felt the shaking more than 9 miles from the center. Both earthquakes were under an hour apart. The depth of the earthquake was around 6.8 kilometers.
The second quake was very close in proximity to the first, with a 1.5 magnitude, and felt about 6 miles away. The location was about 20 miles west of Mount Airy. Both earthquakes were felt near Sparta with weak shaking.
The last relatively uncommon earthquake in Sparta was in 2020 with a magnitude of 5.1 due to a faulting east of the New Madrid seismic zone. The depth of the quake was 7.6 kilometers. This earthquake was the largest in NC in nearly 100 years.
