Plane crash in Outer Banks leaves multiple dead

The NTSB will investigate the crash.

Multiple fatalities were reported.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Multiple people are dead after a single-engine airplane crash in the Outer Banks on Saturday, according to the Wright Brothers National Memorial's First Flight Airport.

The incident occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday. The single-engine craft crashed into a wooded area near the First Flight Airport.

According to the Wright Brothers National Memorial Facebook page, eyewitnesses reported that the airplane was attempting to land at the airport. After it crashed, a fire broke out that consumed the plane.

The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department reported to the scene and extinguished the fire.

There have been multiple confirmed passenger fatalities. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the incident.

The airport said it would be closed Sunday.
