WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A woman has died as a result of a single-vehicle crash in Wilkes County on Wednesday, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol responded to the scene on Greenhorn Road near North Lomax Road at approximately 9:40 a.m. Wednesday. When troopers arrived, they said they found a 2005 Chevrolet Impala that had crossed the center line, drove off the side of the road and struck a tree.

Kayla Mae Combs, 27, of Elkin, died at the scene. She was not restrained by a seatbelt, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

An initial investigation by the Highway Patrol indicated that excessive speed was a "contributing circumstance" to the collision.

Greenhorn Road was closed for an hour this morning as a result of the accident, but it has since reopened.
