Winston-Salem receives $4.4 million for new hybrid electric buses

5 of the city's older buses will be replaced with these eco-friendly additions.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — $4.4 million is coming to Winston Salem Transit Authority (WSTA). The grant, from the the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), will allow the city to replace five fixed-route transit buses with brand new hybrid-electric buses.

According to Winston Salem's Department of Transportation, the city plans to use the funds to retire their older buses in the interest of efficiency and environmental consciousness.

But these newest additions are not the first hybrid-electric buses that the WSTA has secured. Currently, 45 of the buses are hybrid-electric.

The grant is part of the $1.5 billion in funding from the FTA to improve public transportation in 47 states.
