A tractor-trailer crashed in an upright position on I-64 West in Virginia -- bringing traffic to a standstill.

RICHMOND, Va. — A tractor-trailer driver was charged following a bizarre crash on a Virginia highway Thursday morning.

It happened on I-64 West near Richmond, VA around 9:30 a.m. A photo from local law enforcement showed the big rig's bed - empty at the time - leaning against the overhead signage. The bed has since come down, but the highway is still closed.

Virginia State Police are still investigating how exactly the crash happened.

“The cab continued on and then stopped, obviously, cause it had separated from the bed of the tractor-trailer,” said Matt Demlein, a spokesperson for Virginia State Police. “We’re still investigating as to what led up to it actually hitting the sign.”

State police said the tractor-trailer stopped at a weigh station before the crash. The driver, Richard Houston, Jr., was charged with reckless driving. He wasn't hurt.

There's no word when the highway could reopen. In the meantime, officials are asking drivers to go another way while crews work to reopen the highway.
