GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- NC State Highway Patrol troopers say two people died in a multi-car crash that stopped traffic in both directions on Highway 68 in Oak Ridge Thursday morning.
Trooper Knox says the driver of a BMW, Haywood Anderson Jr., died at the scene. The driver of a box truck, Steven Francis Stockstill, died at the hospital.
The crash happened around 5:20 Thursday morning. Knox says Anderson tried passing a red Kia in the northbound lane in a no passing zone. That's when he crashed head-on with the box truck.
Highway Patrol reopened NC-68 around 10 a.m. after it had been shut down for several hours between Edgefield Road and Oak Ridge Road (NC-150).
Highway Patrol says a total of five cars were involved in the crash.
No other injuries were reported.
