Two buses from Randolph County School System involved in crashes, North Carolina State Highway Patrol says

One of the crashes involved a bus from Wheatmore High School and the other involved a bus from Gray's Chapel Elementary School.

A bus from Wheatmore High School was involved in a crash yesterday.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Two buses from the Randolph County School System were involved in separate crashes after school on Monday, Nov. 4.

One of the crashes involved a bus from Wheatmore High School. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said troopers responded to a single-vehicle bus crash on Kennedy Road near Millers Mill Road.

The bus was traveling northwest on Kennedy Road and was transporting one student from Wheatmore High School. 

The bus traveled off the road to the right, then crossed the centerline left of center, ran off the road to the left, and then collided with an embankment and then a tree. 

Both the driver of the school bus and the student had non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. The Randolph County School System also confirmed there was one adult and one student on the bus at the time of the crash.

A friend of the bus driver told WFMY News 2 that the driver is was treated at Moses Cone Hospital for a broken arm and received 18 stitches on her leg. 

State Highway Patrol said the investigation continues and no charges have been filed in the case involving the Wheatmore bus.

There was a second crash involving another school bus from Gray’s Chapel Elementary School. Troopers from the State Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle crash on NC Highway 22 near Jess Hackett Road. 

The bus was traveling north on NC Highway 22 and a Chevrolet truck was traveling south. The truck traveled left of center and sideswiped the school bus. 

State Highway Patrol said no one was injured in the crash and there was property damage only. There were four students on the school bus from Gray’s Chapel Elementary School. 

State Highway Patrol said the driver of the Chevrolet truck admitted to being distracted and was cited for a left of center violation.

City Towing, Inc. is who towed the school buses involved in crashes on Kennedy Road and Millers Mill Road. The buses were taken to the Randolph County School Garage.

City Towing, Inc. said they received a call around 4:30 p.m. yesterday and were on scene for four hours. 

The towing company is still processing the towing cost estimate and paperwork.
