A bus from Wheatmore High School was involved in a crash yesterday.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Two buses from the Randolph County School System were involved in crashes after school on Monday, Nov. 4.

One of the crashes involved a bus from Wheatmore High School. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said troopers responded to a single-vehicle bus crash on Kennedy Road near Millers Mill Road.

The bus was traveling northwest on Kennedy Road and was transporting one student from Wheatmore High School.

The bus traveled off the road to the right, then crossed the centerline left of center, ran off the road to the left, and then collided with an embankment and then a tree.

Both the driver of the school bus and the student had non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. The Randolph County School System also confirmed there was one adult and one student on the bus at the time of the crash.

A friend of the bus driver told WFMY News 2 that the driver is at Moses Cone Hospital and is having surgery this morning.

There was a second crash involving another school bus from Gray’s Chapel Elementary School. Troopers from the State Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle crash on NC Highway 22 near Jess Hackett Road.

The bus was traveling north on NC Highway 22 and a Chevrolet truck was traveling south. The truck traveled left of center and sideswiped the school bus.

State Highway Patrol said no one was injured in the crash and there was property damage only. There were four students on the school bus from Gray’s Chapel Elementary School. The driver of the truck was cited for a left-of-center violation, according to State Highway Patrol.

The bus crashes are separate incidents, according to a member of our news team.

This is an ongoing story.
