Time to Prepare For Business 40 Shutdown in Winston-Salem

NCDOT  is encouraging drivers to use Peters Creek Parkway and U.S. 52 during the closure next year to get in and out of downtown.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - You better get ready.

The traffic in Winston-Salem is about to become a major headache.

NCDOT will shutdown Business 40 from Peters Creek Parkway to U.S. 52 for 20 months.

Drivers are preparing for the worse.

"It's going to be a nightmare, a headache, it's just bad," said James Williams. "Some of my routes do take me down 40 and every morning everybody already knows it's already at a standstill. Just that much shutdown, it's going to be even worse for everybody's commute to and from work".

The closure will happen next year in the Fall as part of the Business 40 Improvement Project.

It's a nearly 100-million dollar project geared towards reconstructing Business 40 from 4th St. to Church St.

Some drivers know their way around and can easily find back routes during the closure.

"We have been made aware, and we are prepared for it," said Sarah Dalrymple. "We'll use local roads because that's what we do anyway. We would rarely get on Business 40 to go downtown, so I don't think it will impact us. It will just change our routes".

Some drivers say the closure will create confusion.

"I particularly use my GPS for everything," said Kenny Brown. "So, I don't know what's going to happen to be honest, especially being new here. I just hope that I can find a way and maybe leave 30 minutes early depending on how far I'm going."

But, traffic could be bumper-to-bumper.

The 20-month long closure is expected to last until the Summer of 2020.
