8 students injured in Stokes County activity bus crash, troopers say

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A Stokes County activity bus carrying 33 students was involved in a crash on I-40 East in Catawba County on Wednesday, March 20, North Carolina State Troopers confirm.

Around 3:20 p.m., two cars traveling eastbound struck each other. 

Troopers said the crash caused one of the cars to lose control and sideswipe the Stokes County activity bus.

Of the 33 students, eight received treatment for minor injuries on the scene, according to troopers.

The drivers from the initial crash were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, troopers said.

Troopers confirmed both drivers were charged with unsafe movement. No charges will be filed against the driver of the Stokes County activity bus.

Stokes County Schools released the following statement regarding the crash:

"Today, a Stokes County Schools activity bus was involved in a traffic incident on Interstate 40. The incident occurred this afternoon at approximately 3:20 PM when two passenger vehicles traveling eastbound collided, causing one of the vehicles to lose control striking the activity bus.

Thankfully, no major injuries were reported, and all minor injuries were promptly treated at the scene by emergency responders. We are pleased to confirm that all students who were on board the activity bus have safely returned home.

Stokes County Schools is grateful for the swift response of emergency services personnel and law enforcement who attended to the scene. The safety and well-being of our students and staff are of paramount importance."
