91-year-old woman killed in Wilkes County crash

An 84-year-old was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 91-year-old woman was killed Sunday after a crask in Wilkes County.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A crash in Wilkes County on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 91-year-old woman from Ronda, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Edith Roberts Luffman was riding as a passenger in a 2007 Ford Fusion driven by her sister, 84-year-old Clara Roberts Adams. The Fusion was traveling northwest on Hoots Road when it failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign abd was struck by a 1996 Ford F-250 traveling southwest on Austin Little Mountain Road, according to a press release.

Adams was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Luffman was transported to an area hospital but died from her injuries.

The driver of the F-250, 18-year-pld John Merritt Wilkerson, of Lowgap, was not injured.

According to the State Highway Patrol, an initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed were contributing factors in the collision. Possible charged are pending upon completion of the investigation.
