NORTH CAROLINA, USA — North Carolina drivers, get ready for changes at intersections when traffic lights aren't working as normal.

The NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) says it is modifying traffic signals to flash red in every direction when there is a malfunction.

It used to be that the main road with the heavier traffic would get a flashing yellow light, indicating drivers should proceed with caution, while the side-street drivers would get a flashing red light, instructing them to completely stop and wait until it's safe to go.

Now, every direction will get a flashing red light, so all drivers must treat intersections as a four-way stop.

“We are making this change to improve the safety of our intersections and provide a consistent display when the signal is not operating normally,” said Nick Zinser, a signals engineer for NCDOT.

NCDOT has more than 9,000 signaled intersections across the state.

The department says it will implement the changes to the traffic lights over the next year.
