GREENSBORO, N.C. — UPDATE: The following road closure near Summit Ave. is not expected to be finished by Oct. 21. In wake of NC A&T's homecoming, they will continue construction Oct. 31.

City officials said two lane closures in Greensboro will cause slight traffic delays starting Monday, Oct. 17.

One lane of North Elm Street will be closed between Tankersley Drive and Sunset Drive as they will be working on a water main replacement.

Crews will be on the scene to help with the flow of traffic. Drivers should expect delays.

Access to residences in the area will not be affected.

City officials said the work is expected to be completed by Monday, November 14, as long as weather and work conditions are not in the way.

This phase is the fourth stage of water service work along North Elm Street which will eventually conclude at its intersection with Cornwallis Drive.

Lanes will be closed at various times on Summit Avenue between Murrow Boulevard and Bessemer Avenue, and on Yanceyville Street between Fifth Avenue and East Lindsay Street.

Sections will be closed as needed to mill the existing road surface to prepare it for the final paving.  Detour signs will be provided for the closed areas, which will open back up for traffic immediately after those areas are milled.

Businesses and residences will be able to access the area.

Crews are not expected to finish by Friday, Oct. 21.

The city of Greensboro released the following statement about the road closure in wake of North Carolina A&T's homecoming.

This work will not be completed by October 21, however, we posted that date for the completion of the major lane closures in consideration of A&T’s homecoming events next week.  Due to the proximity of the University to our work area, and the traffic generated by the events surrounding their homecoming football game, our plan is to have the major work safed up by the end of the week.  We will evaluate traffic next week and allow work to progress as traffic allows. Our goal is to continue the project towards a timely completion, while limiting interference with any events planned as much as we can, and to provide for uninterrupted travel in conjunction with homecoming events.

Milling will completely resume on October 31. The remainder of the milling should take about 10 working days, depending on weather, equipment problems, etc.
