HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has shared new video of the damage to I-40 near the state line.
The video shows extensive damage lingering on the eastbound side of the highway.
The interstate hasn't reopened since Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina in late September. Helene caused widespread damage across the state, killing over 100 people and destroying countless homes and businesses.
The state says it's working with contractors to get the road stabilized.
The goal is to have one lane of traffic open in each direction by New Year's Day.
NCDOT says long-term repairs will take years.
