RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — A crash on Tuesday afternoon left one person dead and one with pending charges. State Highway Patrol said it happened on Walker Mill Road near Wall Brothers Road in Randolph County.

65-year-old Jose Miguel Castillo Ruiz was driving his 2004 Yamaha moped going west on Walker Mill Road when he was struck by a speeding car and thrown from his moped.

Keana Sy Jarrell, 53, was also headed west driving her 2017 Subaru Outback. State Highway Patrol said she "Failed to reduce speed" and rear-ended Castillo Ruiz.

The crash caused a two hour closure on Walker Mill Road.

Castillo Ruiz was then taken to a hospital in High Point with serious, life-threatening injuries. Shortly after he got there, he was air-lifted to a medical center in Winston-Salem.

Investigators learned Wednesday morning that Castillo Ruiz died from his injuries. Jarell's charges are pending.
