ASHEBORO, N.C. — Two children are dead and one person was injured after a crash on I-73 in Randolph County Monday, according to troopers.
The State Highway Patrol got a report about a crash around 12:51 a.m. near Spero Road. Ashlee Anne Caldwell-Crandell, of Asheboro, N.C., was headed north in a 2005 Cadillac CTS and tried to exit off I-73 onto Spero Road after passing the on-ramp entry.
That's when troopers said Caldwell-Crandell hit a sign, crossed over the northbound exit ramp lane to Spero Road, and hit a tree on the side of the highway.
The driver was taken to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
Two children that were in the back seat of the vehicle died.
Troopers are investigating the collision, but believe speeding was a factor, and charges against the driver are pending.
The northbound exit ramp from I-73 to Spero Road was closed for about two hours during the investigation.
