WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Update: Police said Monday that the tractor-trailer driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, and the individuals who had serious injuries are now in stable condition.
Winston-Salem police were on the scene of a crash at Highway 52 Southbound at the Akron Drive exit that resulted in serious injuries Thursday morning.
Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) officers were called to the crash around 8:55 a.m. When they arrived, officers said the crash involved 6 vehicles.
Investigators said that five vehicles were all stopped in the right lane of southbound US 52 when a tractor-trailer failed to reduce speed and crashed into a 1994 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, causing a chain reaction of crashes.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and cooperated with the investigation.
The driver of a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic, the driver, and passengers of the 1994 Chevrolet received serious injuries and were transported to a local medical facility for treatment.
The drivers and passengers of three vehicles received minor injuries and were transported to a local medical facility for treatment.
The southbound lanes of US-52 were closed for approximately 2.5 hours.
