Officials determine fault in after-school van, bus crash that injured 4 children

Troopers at the scene said four young children inside the after-school activities van were injured.

MCLEANSVILLE, N.C. — EDITOR'S NOTE: NC Highway Patrol originally reported of the 4 injured, two were on the bus and two were in the van. Troopers have since corrected this and are now reporting all four children injured were aboard the van. There were no students aboard the bus.

A school bus crashed with an afterschool van at the intersection of Huffine Mill Road and Flemingfield Road, Guilford County EMS confirmed. The Greensboro Fire Department said they were called to the scene at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Representatives from NC Highway Patrol said Lillie Mae Walls, 64, was traveling east on Huffine Mill Rd. while driving a school bus owned by First Student transportation services in Greensboro.

Deborah Diana Miller-Kane, 67, was traveling north on Flemingfield Rd. in a passenger van owned by Christlike Child Care, Inc. Officials said Miller-Kane failed to yield right-of-way to the bus and turned left onto Huffine Mill Rd. in front of Walls.

Walls tried to evade Miller-Kane's van by swerving to the left to avoid hitting the van, but was unsuccessful.

After the crash, both vehicles drove to the left where the van overturned. Four children aboard the van received minor injuries, according to a trooper on scene. Miller-Kane suffered minor injuries, as did Walls.

All were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. The children were all under the age of 7. No students were aboard the bus, troopers said.

Miller-Kane was charged with failure to yield right-of-way.
