79-year-old dies after car crash on I-40 in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — UPDATE: Greensboro Police have since provided a name correction of the 79-year-old woman who died. 

A person who was taken to a hospital after an accident on I-40 westbound has died, according to Greensboro police. 

The incident happened Saturday around 9 a.m.involving two cars.

Police said 79-year-old, Lena Thomspon of Greensboro, was driving a 1986 Nissan 300ZX west on Interstate 40 and the vehicle became stationary in the center lane of travel. Thompson was then hit by 21-year-old Ashley Holt, the driver of a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic. Thompson was taken to a hospital where she later died. Holt was treated for minor injuries after the crash. 

Interstate 40 westbound just east of Koury Boulevard was shut down for several hours, according to police.

Westbound traffic was redirected onto Freeman Mill Road. Officers are asking people to use caution in the area and seek alternate routes.

Exit 217 has since reopened, according to NCDOT officials.
