CLAREMONT, N.C. — A 4-year-old girl named Luna has died and three other children are in the hospital after two vehicles collided in Catawba County Thursday morning.
NC State Highway Patrol said the crash happened on Boggs Road near Hunsucker Drive just after 8 a.m. Troopers said a 2008 GMC Acadia crossed the centerline, crashing head-on with a 2022 GMC Yukon. The wreck occurred during heavy rain conditions.
The driver of the Acadia was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two child passengers were taken to area hospitals. Luna died due to the crash while her mother and sister were also injured.
"Luna touched so many lives, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled," the GoFuncMe fundraiser reads.
Three people were also in the Yukon and were taken to the hospital. The driver and one child both have non-life-threatening injuries. A second child has life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol said impairment was not a contributing factor in the crash. Possible charges are pending.
Heavy bands of rain and some isolated flash flooding was happening at the time of the incident.
