FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — An 8-year-old boy died over the weekend after being injured in a five-car crash in Forsyth County on Saturday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Deputies said they responded to I-40 near Mile Marker 183 on Saturday at approximately 6:10 a.m. in reference to a collision. An investigation revealed that a 2023 Honda CR-V was traveling west on I-40 when it failed to "adequately reduce speed" and collided with a 2018 Kia Niro. A wave of collisions ensued.
As a result of the impact, the Kia Niro hit a Ford Fusion, which then collided with a Kia Soul. The Honda CR-V, meanwhile, hit a Volkswagen Jetta before coming to a stop.
Juan Ignacio Valadez-Ilanes, an 8-year-old from Lexington, was a passenger in the Jetta. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but he died from his injuries Sunday.
The State Highway Patrol said all other passengers had non-life-threatening injuries. Their investigation concluded that impairment was not a contributing factor to the collision.
Charges are pending in this case, according to Highway Patrol. Stay with WFMY News 2 for the latest updates on the investigation.
