A 71-year-old man was killed Friday after a crash in Wilkes County.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — One man died and one woman was severely injured in a crash in Wilkes County on Friday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol officers responded to a collision on NC 16 near Knollwood Drive at 12:40 p.m. on Friday where they found that a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee crossed the center line while traveling south and hit a 2023 Ford Explorer traveling north head-on.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as 71-year-old Richard Wayne Earp, died at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the Ford, 58-year-old Rebecca McKinney Hamrick of Asheville, was transported to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Highway Patrol, an initial investigation determined that speed and impairment were not contributing factors to the crash.
