GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Science Center just announced the birth of a white-blotched river ray pup!

The pup was born Wednesday afternoon to first-time parents, Papaya and Hodor. Papaya came to the center from the Georgia Aquarium in November of 2022 on a breeding recommendation from the SSP.

This is the first time the GSC has had the opportunity to breed this species and are thrilled to support this SSP.

The center has not released a name for the pup, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.

More about White-blotched Sting Rays

White-blotched river rays are native to the Xingu River Basin in Brazil, which is connected to the Amazon River, according to the National Aquarium's Website. They believed the stingray was only indigenous to the Xingu River but it has been spotted in two other rivers. Experts say the stingray appears to live where they find most of its food in rocky river bottoms.

Why the white spots on its back? They allow the stingray to help blend into its habitat.

Their diet consists of other small invertebrates such as:

  • Fish
  • Freshwater snails
  • Crabs

Most of them grow between 11.8 to 15.7 inches wide and two feet long.
