Greensboro Science Center bringing the rainforest to the city!

The Greensboro Science Center announced their latest project, a huge biodome that will transport us to the Amazon rainforest.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Every now and then, something happens that's a game-changer—this time, it's yet another experience at the Greensboro Science Center (GSC).

It is a massive undertaking: building a biodome that will hold over 200 animals native to the rainforest, plus native plants and trees that will span the length of a football field.

"The enclosure will also be three-quarters of a football field wide and 5 stories tall", said Executive Director Glenn Dobrogosz, "Initially, we will plant trees that will be about 20 to 23 feet tall with the hopes that over the years, they will grow to fill the dome."

Dobrogosz said they will have everything from bugs and insects to birds and monkeys all wandering certain areas of the dome, living as they would in the wild.

"You will enter and stroll through a massive climate-controlled dome where the temperature will always be 84 degrees and humidity levels like the rainforest.  This will be unlike anything we've done before, and hopefully, people driving along Lawndale Drive will wonder what this is and stop by for a look," said Dobrogosz.

Visitors will be able to view into huge aquarium tanks holding fish of the rainforest and even walk under bridges that will allow the primates to move freely from one exhibit to another.

Construction for the dome will begin this fall, with an estimated completion date of September 2026.
