INDIANA, USA — The ground is warming up and getting soaked this spring, helping two cicada broods emerge from their 13- or 17-year cycle. The majority of the cicada reports are in the southeast, but there have been a few reports of sightings in the Midwest. Widespread emergence will take place over the next handful of weeks.

When do cicadas start emerging?
Data from past years show that once 8-inch deep soil temperatures reach 64 to 65 degrees, the cicadas will start coming out of the ground. Once they are out, they will survive for a handful of weeks. We also tend to see more cicadas emerge after heavy rain, which helps loosen and warm the soil.

The vast majority of reports are coming in from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The reports farther to the north, especially in Illinois, are some reports from landscapers digging who are finding the cicadas, just before they are really ready to emerge in mass waves.

According to NBC News, some homeowners in South Carolina have called police because the sound of the cicadas has been so loud.
