GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina A&T is known as a national leader in creation and innovation and the newest project on campus is no exception.
The university is "Driving into the future."
The school showcased its new self-driving shuttles Tuesday.
WFMY News 2's Jaelen Gilkey went to find out how they work.
Self-driving vehicles have been one of the most popular innovations in the last 20 years and soon, you'll be able to catch a ride in one on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
"Being able to apply something you're learning in the classroom and do it in a real vehicle on a real project it's really rewarding," said Daniel Tobias, a second-year master's student said.
The future is here and these North Carolina A&T research students are looking to make their mark on campus a permanent one.
"Being on the cutting edge of research is really great for students, and being able to walk to a lab on your campus and do stuff like this, is insane," Tobias, said.
Eventually, these self-driving shuttles will replace the current Aggie Shuttles on campus.
Knowing your work is at the forefront of changing the campus, makes the student experience all worth it.
"You just use your phone to ask for a ride to get you from point a, to point b and the same car can then be used for another person," Jose Matute, a Pos-Doctoral Researcher said.
These students are working on something no other college campus in the region has done.
They are in the final stages of completing the south's first completely autonomous campus shuttle.
"We're doing a lot of the beginning work, but there will be lessons learned that we can teach other students. There can be classes developed on this that will help train the next generation. When we graduate, new students come in, but the project continually lives on," Tobais said.
